From YRP:

Investigators with the York Regional Police #2 District Criminal Investigations Bureau have charged a 22-year-old man after he assaulted a police officer in the City of Richmond Hill.

On Friday, March 27, 2020, at 3:40 p.m., York Regional Police Communications received a radio call from an officer requiring assistance in the parking lot of Hillcrest Mall, located at 9350 Yonge Street. When officers arrived they found that a York Regional Police Constable was suffering from serious injuries. He was rushed to hospital, where he remains, for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. The injured officer is a four-year veteran with the service.

Responding officers located the suspect at the scene who was not injured and he was placed under arrest.

The investigation has revealed that the police officer was parked in the mall parking lot, near the Marshalls store, when he was approached by the suspect. The suspect assaulted the officer who was seated inside of his cruiser. The altercation continued outside of the car where the suspect took possession of the officer’s baton and continued the assault.
